As we celebrate Pride Month, public relations practitioners have a unique opportunity to celebrate the vibrant LGBTQ+ community through thoughtful and impactful storytelling. Key concepts such as diversity, inclusion, representation and allyship are at the forefront of these efforts.
To deepen your understanding and enhance your practice, dive into "Inexplicably Me: A Story of Labels, Worthiness, and Refusing to Be Boxed In" by Chelsea Austin. This inspirational memoir of a girl with two gay dads offers a profound exploration of self-identity and resilience, providing valuable perspectives that can inform and enrich your professional efforts in promoting equality and inclusion. Chelsea reflects on how we are all much more similar than different and talks about the necessity of spreading the gospel of tolerance.
Chelsea shared the following thoughts for communication pros:
“As communicators, you know how important words are and how we can use words to empower or weaponize, encourage or demonize and most importantly, make change depending on what it is you want to accomplish. You are in a prime position to frame the message properly and move people with a tool that can make or break not just relationships, but our world. When communicating in your work and in the world, you have the opportunity to make the world a kinder, gentler, more accepting place with your words, which, if you ask me, we all need more of.”
Incorporating these insights into your work will not only enhance your professional practice but also contribute to a more inclusive and compassionate world. This Pride month, let’s commit to using our skills and platforms to uplift and celebrate the LGBTQ+ community, ensuring their stories are told with the respect and recognition they deserve.
