"Best Advice I Ever Got" recognizes the role that senior public relations practitioners play in shaping our careers as well as the opportunity that each of us has to shape the careers of the next generation of public relations professionals. In this profile, Mary Haban, APR, shares her story.
1. What's the best public relations advice you ever got?
Invest in yourself. Don’t wait for others to do it.
2. Who gave you this advice?
An accomplished yet very down-to-earth golf course architect named Ron Garl, whom I had the good fortune to meet while attending the International Network of Golf conference years ago. We got to talking about the various courses he had lent his expertise to, including a redesign of the phenomenal course at the Vinoy Golf Club, and when I asked about this path to success, he gave me that advice.
3. What's an example of how you've applied this advice?
I’ve made it a point to invest my time and resources into continuing my membership in PRSA, even if the companies I worked with didn’t always support it. This commitment has been a key to unlocking lifelong learning opportunities, developing incredible friendships, and paving the way for me to serve in a multitude of leadership roles, including chapter president, in 2009.
4. How has this advice influenced the way you’ve continued to grow as a professional?
The advice I got that day changed the way I view my role in my own success. If I had waited for others to agree that investing in PRSA and myself was worthwhile, I might still be waiting. But thanks to a chance meeting that day, I no longer wait . . . I act.
