What's the best public relations advice you ever got?
Build strong relationships before you need them, and maintain them throughout your career. In addition to media relations, relationship building is critical for making strong connections in the community and with targeted industries on behalf of your employers and clients.

Allan Priaulx, president, Resource Media. Based in New York, Allan started as a consultant to a company I worked for and has grown into a mentor and lifelong friend.
What's an example of how you've applied this advice?
I've used this advice throughout my career. In numerous crisis situations involving employers and clients, having established crucial connections has been a real asset in being able to contain and manage the story as well as resolve the problem.
How has this advice influenced how you've continued to grow as a professional?
My contact network has always been one of my greatest assets. The ability to reach out to current and past connections for advice, guidance, and resources has been a critical strategy for my success. In addition, it has also allowed me to mentor other public relations practitioners and make positive connections for clients and peers alike.
