Supporting the LGBTQIA+ Community All Year Round

Alexandra Booth is a Digital Content Producer at Hillsborough Community College, PRSA Tampa Bay Secretary and a member of the Digital Communications Committee

This year, PRSA Tampa Bay teamed up with AMA Tampa Bay to show our support for the LGBTQIA+ community at the 2022 St. Pete Pride Parade, one of the largest Pride parades in the country. We had a great time cheering as the floats went by, collecting beads and showing our support. The D&I Committee put together a YouTube video to commemorate the day.

Now, Pride Month isn’t the only time of the year you should recognize the LGBTQIA+ community. There are numerous awareness months and days throughout the year that raise visibility where you can show your support:

  • Week after February 14 – Aromantic Awareness Week (Sunday through Saturday)
  • March 31 – International Transgender Day of Visibility
  • April 6 – International Asexuality Day
  • April 26 – Lesbian Visibility Day
  • May 17 – International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia
  • May 19 – Agender Pride Day
  • May 24 – Pansexual and Panromantic Awareness and Visibility Day
  • June – Pride Month
  • June 12 – Pulse Remembrance Day
  • June 28 – Stonewall Riots Anniversary
  • July 14 – International Nonbinary Day (during Nonbinary Awareness Week)
  • September 23 – Celebrate Bisexuality Day (week of Bisexual Awareness Week)
  • October – LGBTQ+ History Month
  • October 11 – National Coming out Day
  • October 26 – Intersex Awareness Day
  • Last full week in October – Asexual Awareness Week
  • November – Transgender Awareness Month
  • November 8 – Intersex Day of Solidarity
  • November 20 – Transgender Day of Remembrance
  • December 8 – Pansexual Pride Day

This is by no means an exhaustive list of every holiday available, so to those interested in further research can find more information and resources at the links provided.

October is LGBT History month, an annual observance of the community’s history of the gay rights and civil rights movements, which was first recognized in the United States in 1994. The month has also turned into a celebration of the achievements of important icons in the LGBTQIA+ community.

There are also more ways to get involved within the local community. St. Pete Pride and Tampa Pride have more events throughout the year than parades (which happen in June and March respectively.) You can also volunteer at these events and donate to local or national organizations.

As an openly queer individual, it makes me truly proud to be a member of this chapter and see the outward support we show to members of my community. Thinking to the future, I look forward to seeing more content and getting even more people involved in the chapter’s future Pride events. Happy Pride!
